Another attractive title in the ``Don't Turn Away'' series, first published in Sweden. Six-year-old Mathias is a deaf child who also has cerebral palsy, severely limiting his coordination and mobility. Supportive parents, therapists, and teachers assist him in exercising and strengthening his muscles, developing communications skills with sign language and a computer, and encourage him to experience childhood's ordinary pleasures. The many appealing b&w photos show Mathias in his daily routine and other activities: running an obstacle course in his motorized wheel chair, swimming, skating, baking rolls, enjoying a restaurant meal. Throughout, Bergman stresses Mathias's parents' pride in his accomplishments. Upbeat, compassionate, useful. Questions and answers about cerebral palsy (``Can you catch it?''); where to write for information; further reading; glossary; index.~(Nonfiction. 8+)
