KIRKUS REVIEW

Prohibition, the beginnings of gangsterdom, strikes and the passing of the old order of politicians and the patriarchal rule combine to serve as setting for a marital tragedy. Goodish of its sort, if you like the sort. It is the story of a doctor for whom failure turns to success, when he is taken up by the bigwigs, but who rebels when he finds he is being used to their ends. The book is designed as the first panel in a trilogy showing the life of a typical American town, which might be anywhere from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania.
