THE ILLUSTRATED FAVOURITE POEMS WE LEARNED AT SCHOOL

This Irish import is illustrated with black-and-white photographs from the last century. The poems are all short (none longer than two pages, which in some cases means excerpts); all of the rhymed verse is certainly familiar to armies of readers on this side of the Atlantic, and of some appeal to Irish communities since a handful of the poems are in Gaelic. Kilmer’s “Trees,” Masefield’s “Sea-fever,” and Wordsworth’s “Daffodils” are here; Lucy Gray, Lochinvar, Lord Ullin’s daughter, and the boy who stood on the burning deck (“Casabianca”) spin their verses. Children may be captured by the vintage images and the pounding rhythms of some poems, but the appeal of this will be for much older caregivers, looking back on school days that included memorizing such pieces.
