Sub-titled ""Some Choices Facing Youth Today"", this is a series of essays by some of the outstanding writers and educators of the day, and though consistently stimulating, have no particular interrelation nor relation to the title. Henry Seidel Canby leads off with a survey of American literature as reflecting its national experience; Robert Moses follows with a sketch of three evangelists in American politics; Malcolm Cowley presents with great integrity the craft of writing for writing's sake; and others,- Jacques Barzun on the idea of a career; Hans Kohn on history and the future; J. Frank Dobie on animal tales of the South West; Dean Gauss on the humane tradition; morality, the atomic age, the inner life of Melville, education, as other concerns. The diversity of subjects here makes any particular audience difficult to define, although the book is intended as a stimulus to youth.
