AFFAIR AT JUALA

Pub Date: April 15th, 1964

It started in an English boarding school where John Bryce, one of those demi-god prefect types, felt some of the love that used to dare not speak its name for William Hammond. His advances on the younger boy earned Bryce his dismissal from the school. Their next chance meeting was in young manhood. Bryce was newly married but still actively homosexual. He pretends to befriend Hammond who falls in love with the neglected wife. Her murder, with all evidence pointing toward Hammond, is nevertheless traced to Bryce who is imprisoned for fifteen years. Hammond, now in California, is once again pursued by Bryce... The psychology is questionable, but the story has a certain repugnant energy. Although this is not considered a mystery by the publisher, it will deviate primarily to that market.
