ANALYTICAL WRITING by Thomas Johnson

ANALYTICAL WRITING

By

Publisher: Harper & Row

Thomas Johnson takes a logical approach toward business and technical writing. He talks about presenting detail and ideas, against the abstract noun which confuses, the passive verb, for an objective rather than an impersonal style. He discusses the flow of ideas--orienting the reader, wariness of technical density, the necessary connectives and intensives. In organization he points out that results should come before analysis, gives eight case histories of article structure, advises on organizing the long formal report. He finally turns to the proper use of metaphor and lists further reading possibilities. Good general advice, not so specific in preparing different forms of writing as Perlmutter's Practical Guide to Effective writing 223, 1965).
