NEW ORLEANS: A Guide to America's Most Interesting City

By

Publisher: Doubleday

Viewed specifically as a guide-a handbook for tourists, this is no doubt a useful volume. But somehow--while the subtitle defines it as ""America's most interesting city"", the text fails almost wholly to convey this quality. The facts are succinctly marshalled,-historical, biographical, pictorial, legendary, as the case may be. But they lack color and flavor-two ingredients that make up New Orleans' charm. Possibly the 24 black and white illustrations promised (but not seen at this writing) will compensate for the lack in the text. But to one reader who knows and loves New Orleans, this writer has failed to capture either the interest or the character of the city.
