Larry Chance, in whose name a South Georgia farm has been left, fights valiantly to protect his home against the machinations of an irresponsible father. Not only is his love of home at stake but his devotion to a puppy who reminds him of the past glory of the Chance kennels. Together with an intimidated young girl, he exposes himself to the perils of the swamps and the aggressiveness of an escaped convict in a fearless effort to protect what he is. His success not only assures him his initial goals, but helps two bewildered adults face life on a more realistic basis. Realistic adventure grows from the author's knowledgeable portrayal of the Georgia terrain and the life and struggle there.
