A lonely old man of Bethlehem passes the night of the Nativity helping a stranger repair his sandal strap and assisting at the birth of another child. He hears the sound of singing, and sees the star, but does not realize their significance. He and the stranger linger on the hillside, admire the heavens, and sing to life and birth. A gentle, lyrical story, beautifully told by this poet writing his first book for children. Soft chalk illustrations in muted nighttime colors complement the text. A still, dreamy quality prevails, the scenes swept free of distracting detail. The sculptured folds of cloaks, curtains and bed clothes provide the only movement. A story for quiet sharing.
