THE GREAT SONG BOOK

Pub Date: Oct. 13th, 1978

Wishy-washy Ungerer watercolors, in an Olde English mode (after Rowlandson et al.) that Raymond Briggs does better, add nothing of substance to this collection of 68 more-or-less familiar songs--traditional songs, that is, of the nursery-rhyme (""Hey, Diddle, Diddle""), folk-ballad (""Foggy, Foggy Dew""), Christmas-carol sort. The flap copy notes that the arrangements ""have been selected for a wide range of musical ability,"" but the practical result of their greatly (and inexplicably) varying levels of difficulty is that the collection as a whole suits neither the rank beginner, the passable accompanist, or the proficient musician. Guitar chords are provided; the list of titles is at the close.
