AN UMBRELLA NAMED UMBRELLA

The thin, fanciful Manhattan odyssey of Umbrella, first seen in a Chinatown window--by Anne, who will have no other even though this one has holes in it and is just a sample. Anne plays, sleeps and talks with Umbrella, who answers in Chinese, but then she leaves it at the movies and from there it travels to a Harlem apartment, downtown in a taxi with a drunk, from one lesson to another with a music teacher, and finally, after Anne visits the second piano pupil, ""back home where he belonged."" There are some deft touches in Tobias' diverse city types, but they're essentially trimming on a cute, sentimental frame.
