Even those who know not to paint themselves into a corner can benefit from the clearly written, amply illustrated instructions contained in this home improvement book. The authors cover everything from plumb bobs to sump pumps and point out what jobs to leave to a professional and which may require approval from local agencies. Although in some cases the preference for one way rather than another is unexplained, more often the consequences of inferior methods are indicated as are those hard-to-handle final touches. Basic advice: don't rip out until replacements have arrived and use the actual material instead of measuring whenever possible: most mistakes come from a one-inch misreading of the tape. A solid foundation for do-it-yourselfers.
