Little Hans, a shepherd boy, finds a miraculous flute, which whenever he plays it, makes people instantly forget their cares. His gift wins him friends, riches, and finally an invitation to come to court. But Hans, by this time, has become somewhat vain and when he lifts his miraculous flute to play for the king, nothing but an awful noise comes out. Repentant at his vanity, Hans realizes that his flute will only play for those pure of heart, and in his remorse fashions out a plain little flute of wood. Instantly a happy melody fills the valley and Hans is never, never vain again. Tom Hamil whose Brother Alonzo was selected as an outstanding children's book by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, both in his text and in his illustrations happily combines whimsy with morality.
