KEEP YOUR CAR RUNNING: How to Be an Auto Genius

The road to being an auto genius begins with a lesson in how to open the hood and ends here with changing the points, ""probably the closest you will ever get to applying real automotive know-how."" McPherson knows his audience--the people who have to be told where to find their own dipsticks--and his explanations (in a gunky battery the power is ""slithering and skittering away"") ought to make these automotive illiterates feel comfortable. The inclusion of tips on how to ""drive"" an automatic transmission and the omission of any advice on stick shifts is the best indication of who might find this useful--we'd say it's less a matter of age than orientation.
