KIRKUS REVIEW

An anthology of articles on famed baseball figures -- among them Roger Kahn on Gil Hodges; John Updike on Ted Williams; Ring Lardner on Ty Cobb -- prefaced by a few words from Met superchucker Seaver. Yes, Hammerin' Hank's bag is consistency and DiMaggio's hitting streak lasted for 56 games. Ed Graham's amusing piece on Mickey Mantle reveals what happens to a sports star when assaulted by in extremis adulation from his fans. On the whole a competent selection (the inclusion of Johnny Bench may seem premature) though such a sampler has less zip than one of the author's hard ones.
