The title character is a middle-aged ex-marine, now aide-de-camp to our ambassador in the fictional Latin American country of Maragua, festering under a dictatorship, cynical Yankee financial support, and Hodak's efforts to be diplomatically useful--which lead to riot, assassination and Hodak's romance in equally incredible parts. John Wayne is currently making movies like this which do not require the effort of turning pages to find out what happens to a lunkhead like Hodak, who risks Latin American lives in order to let a drunken American test his courage and regain his manhood by freeing a political prisoner--thus precipitating an armed revolt. . . . Hodak sets this up primarily because the girl he loves is attracted to the sot. Much worse is in store for her--she picks Hodak.
