KIRKUS REVIEW

Far from the enfant terrible of My Mother Is A Violent Woman, etc., this is a deliberately ingenuous, poignant, and sometimes sentimental story of the childhood of an army child, Little Jim Tucker. There are the four people he loves and who make up his restricted world; Mama, who dies when a new baby is born; Big Jim, who never quite got over her loss; Missy Choosey, the little girl next door and his only playmate whom he grows up to marry; and Sui Jen, the Chinese houseman, who serves Big and Little Jim with vigilant, self-effecting devotion and whose wisdom helps to make a man of him. Vignette -- almost no more -- and appealing.
