KIRKUS REVIEW

An adult book -- reported P. 260 -- which is an ingenuous, gentle, episodic account of the growing up of Peter McCarthy; of Maggie his mother who hated war; of his D.A. father, of the colored woman who ""rised"" him, and of the gang of three pals who went with him through parochial school and High School, and grew up together to face the actuality of war. Peter waits until he is 18 to join the Navy, is wounded and stranded on an island. Some whimsy, much warmth for a story of current interest.
