SILVER BUCKLES ON HIS KNEE

An ingenuous gentle, episodic account of growing up, this time the story of Peter McCarthy, and of those he loved; Maggie, his mother who hated war, his D.A. father, Kelty Lou , the colored woman who ""rised"" him, and his gang of three friends who went through parochial school and high school with him. They all grow up to face the actuality of war -- but Peter waits until he's 18 to enlist, in the Navy, is wounded and stranded on an island where he has a strange vision disbelieved by all until his return home. Some whimy, much warmth for a story levelled in the familiar.
