This extraordinary series of beautiful small books, liberally illustrated with 21 full-color and 30 to 40 in black and white, is bringing the arts and crafts of Japan to the American public. Possibly the subject of textiles is particularly appealing and this text, by a staff member of the Tokyo National Museum, traces briefly 2000 years of history, not only of dyeing and weaving of fabrics but of their use in the national costume, the kimono. Dyeing methods, with swatches of 22 colors, and expanded descriptive captions of the illustrative material make this unique.
