THE SOUP BONE

Here's an unusual addition to the Halloween repertoire: A lonely old lady, making soup on Halloween, is in need of a bone. Deciding (rather unaccountably) to dig for one in her yard, she unearths a skeleton. It chases her; she dons her handy dog costume and frightens it (rejecting the broom closet, it hides under the bed). Then the old lady and the skeleton declare a truce, share some soup, and set out together to ""scare somebody."" A bit contrived, but well told; Tomes' expertly crafted illustrations, in soft earth tones with gentle touches of brighter color, strike a good balance between the story's humor and its pleasurable spookiness.
