From the author of Young Lions (1989), another handsome look at animals in their African habitat. Mysteriously, the rhinoceros mother has been wounded. After considering and dismissing some unlikely causes (not including man), it is divulged that an elephant defending her young from an imagined threat has attacked her. Yoshida suggests that if infection occurs it is likely to prove lethal; fortunately, the tickbirds clustering around the wound to catch insects will probably save the rhinocerous. Somber and realistic as far as it goes, though there is no mention of the rhinoceros's endangered status; still, the lovely, panoramic spreads make a potent implicit plea for its vanishing world.
