England in the '20's and again (as in Angel's Flight-1947) some of the glitter of higher circles in the story of Loraine, Shandy and Benedict Drew. Shandy, who knew Loraine as a child, hoped to marry her some day, but lost her when at 18 she fell in love with Benedict Drew, talented, temperamental, facile, volatile. Marriage does not dim Benedict's charms for Loraine, despite his financial fliers, his infidelities, his drinking- which was responsible for an accident which caused her to lose a baby-until finally, involved in a crooked deal he is forced to retire to Australia. Shandy hopes this will reopen his chances, but with Benedict's return, finds he cannot hold her. A smooth, rather than subtle story, of a one man woman, and a man with a way with all women; this combines elements of glamor and substance (fine furs and fancy cars) which should satisfy romantically inclined readers and renters.
