THE BEAUTIFUL OF AUSTERLITZ

The veteran military historian summarizes Napoleon's career and character, closes in on his advance into Austria to anticipate the allies, details his direction of the assault that became, as per the subtitle and subsequent verdict, his ""greatest victory."" The exposition is matter-of-fact and middle-ground; there are few vignettes or sweeping insights. Consequently this is both less vivid and less revealing than some of the earlier Battle Books; it does get Napoleon to and through Austerlitz with precision.
