Nothing much ever happens out on the ranch--until Rancher Hicks decides to drive into town. Sleepy Gulch is a hive of activity: folks are still talking about the five-minute rainstorm of '49, the local checkers game has been going on for weeks, and (wonder of wonders) while Hicks is there, a turtle crosses the road! Back at the ranch, things are about as usual--except that Hicks' wife Elna wins the lottery and a huge refrigerator, strikes oil, signs a movie contract and receives a visit from the President. Ross illustrates these goings-on with scenes alternately sleepy and frenetic; as usual, his figures have a tendency to cavort at the slightest opportunity. This lacks the droll irony of Kellogg's The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash (Dial, 1980), but even very young readers will enjoy the joke and Rancher Hicks' final consternation.
