A GIRL'S GUIDE TO TAKING OVER THE WORLD

Writings from the Girl Zine Revolution

edited by Tristan Taormino & Karen Green

Pub Date: July 24th, 1997
ISBN: 0-312-15535-2
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin

A useful anthology of work produced over the past decade in zines written by women, wildly uneven in quality but nonetheless fascinating for the light they cast on the issues, attitudes, and ideas circulating among young women. As the titles of some of the zines (Not Your Bitch, Angry Young Woman, You Might As Well Live, Hungry Girl, Cupsize) indicate, the writing in such publications is irreverent, sometimes angry, often concerned with questions of gender, power, and creativity, and usually deeply personal. Taormino and Green (publishers of Pucker Up, where some of these pieces first appeared) have included a representative survey, being careful to cover a wide variety of subjects (from some frank discussions of sexuality to hilarious reflections on family and the media) and voices.
