A LIFE IN THE THEATRE

Dr. Guthrie is one of the most distinguished directors in the modern theatre. He has worked all over the world, and his directorial approach, especially to the works of Shakespeare, has had a proportionately wide influence. Beginning with his mother's grandfather (who was also the great grandfather of the late Tyrone Power) his associations with theatrical things and people have been intimate and important. This is not a personal biography, but a record of work. Dr. Guthrie's special prominence in the history of the famous Old Vic enables him to give a long, clear, rather informal history of that theatre, with special attention to the life and work of Lilian Bayliss, that is as good as anything written on the subject. His notes on working in such widely scattered localities as Israel, Finland, and Canada are equally full and fascinating. Liberally interspersed throughout are very intelligent comments by Dr. Guthrie on his theories of theatre, acting, directing, and that presentational style of performance which he has made very much his own.
