JANINE IS FRENCH

A truly charming excursion into the wonderland of an encounter between an unsophisticated, unself-conscious and utterly feminine French woman and life in the United States. Our interpreter is Janine's American husband, whose own attitude of amazed and amused discovery offers a view of detached intimacy and a style of delivery as neat as Janine's quick little steps. From the day when Janine arrives and experiences pitiful pangs of homesickness to the day when she refuses to surrender her Reillytown home or to leave it long enough to use the "back to Paris" fund labored for through her dressmaking, barbering, mill-handing and Lloyd's writing and renting, Janine offers uninhibited and emotional commentary on American bosoms (balcony), cars (not sympathique), the Liberty bell ("C'est beau, mais c'est broken"). She emerges triumphant from a trial psychoanalysis, turns from television to the greater joy of neighborhood controversies, suffers the loss of a baby, revises the English language with an unfailing sense of artistry, well caught by her attentive husband.
