A story of the Ban Joachin Valley and of the Nortons who live in a colony of shanks and dream of having a farm again. Humor and kindliness are woven through ordinary everyday events. The children ring true. Angelo knows people of this type -- there is Tony, an Italian whose mangy dog presents a constant problem to the children; there's an aging farmer who eyes the Nortons appraising them as possible inheritors of his small holdings, and it is through him they eventually secure -- on easy terms -- a farm of their own. Good human interest in contemporary setting.
