By the author of The Miracle on 34th Street (and again a closely timed book-motion picture release) this makes the most of a catchy idea and breezes right through some entertaining moments concerned with young love and baseball. Vernon, a research fellow in chemistry, intense, serious, has only one experiment to pull off to get a professor's post. And except for the unaccountable, absent trances which come over him every spring (and which derivate in baseball) he is a worthy and approved husband-to-be for Debbie, the president's daughter. His experiment, a chemical which is repelled by wood, gives him his great idea, and leaving college for St. Louis and their ball team, he proves- with his solution- that he can pitch a ball with a cockeyed hop no bat can hit. As King Kelly, Vernon sets a record for strikeouts (and walks), is the sensation of the season, wins the series for St. Louis, and returns to College and more Debbie successful and solvent... The book here is not just a scenario synopsis, and this was not true of the first, and is fresh and fetching entertainment. Surer for rent than sales.
