A study of conflicting personalities, -- easy going, idealistic Jim and beauty loving little Abby, on the one hand, Jim's pleasure-seeking wife and his hard-headed, repressed sister on the other. And against all odds, Jim helps Abby find release and expression in her poetry, and after her death keeps within his heart the knowledge of their love as her great inspiration. Carefully and delicately done, with the exception of one scene that is out of key. But a novel that it is difficult to place, since the whole interest lies in the interplay of characters, and the capturing of the atmosphere of a house divided against itself, against a background of the beauty of the author's own field, northern New York.
