MATUK, THE ESKIMO BOY

The story is a reprint of one that first appeared in Jack and Jill. Matuk, anxious for the day when he can join his father and the other hunters, practices alone. He loses one of his pups in an ice crack and, at great risk, rescues him in time for his father to see how smart and brave he is. Despite the use of special Eskimo terms (for which a glossary is provided), the attitudes and the reactions make the Arctic seem like frozen suburbia. The illustrations by Haris Petie, in the blue black and white that do summon up the idea of ice and snow, are not satisfying either. Matuk and his parents look much more Japanese than Eskimo.
