Another of the author's misty-eyed blonde heroines with a clouded past (The Stone Maiden, etc.). This time it's Linda Edwards, raised by a loving aunt and uncle in Manhattan, vowing never to return to Wessex, Conn., where her mother drowned years before, supposedly murdered by slow-witted maid Sara Breed, who has been in prison hospital ever since. But in Venice, Linda meets rich, incredibly handsome Guy Nordeen, they fall madly in love and marry. . .and three guesses as to Guy's home town! Back in Wessex, in the new house Guy's parents have given them, Linda keeps getting bad vibes and the marriage looks rocky. She visits Sara Breed in prison and tracks down some family history dating back to the Salem witch trials; but it's dying Dilsey Wolsifer, longtime family friend, who confirms Linda's suspicion that she and Guy are the targets of witchcraft instigated by chic Peggy Crofton, the town's social leader. More romance than mystery, a readable, innocuous trifle--straightforward but saccharine.
