KIRKUS REVIEW

... is Stuart Howell- a promoter- with a million dollar proposition on the line; his wife- after a few casual conversations- is Jean McVeigh whom he salvages after a suicide attempt- a young woman of few attractions but large assets. Jean's doubts -of Stuart's intentions- increase, as he tests her accident-proneness on a balcony, forges her signature on a $100,000 note, so that when confronted, exposed and humiliated, he becomes a more desperate- and deadly- opponent.... Not the allure of Laura, etc., but rather for the Patricia Highsmith audience- an expertise of unpleasant characters and malevolent designs.
