BUILDERS OF EMERGING NATIONS

By

Publisher: Holt, Rinehart & Winston

One of the best informed authorities in the field of foreign affairs (and certainly one of those with the keenest power of communication) has written here of the men behind today's headlines. She has chosen for special focus 18 of the world leaders of emerging nations, not confining her attention to living active men, but including those like Ataturk and Magsaysay, whose precepts still function in their countries' development. The qualities for survival in this area include courage, understanding and communication with their people, determination, and comprehension of world situation. She bases her analysis of both countries and people on one essential- the acceptance of inevitability of change-and is perceptive in distinguishing between communism and the adaptation of society to modern techniques through various deviations from the Western practices- through authoritarianism as opposed to totalitarianism. The countries are given in capsule form, in the process of emergence, then the key figure. Those chosen include Khrushchev, Tito, Ataturk, Ben Gurion, Nasser, U Nu, Nehru, Ayub Khan, Sukarno, Mao Tse-Tung, Magsaysay, Bourguiba, Houphousi-Boigny, Nkrumah, Tom Mboya, Nyerere, Castro and Betancourt. A book which deserves thoughtful reading and careful study.
