EAST OF THE IRON CURTAIN

Reporter for the English News Chronicle gives his account of a three months trip through Eastern Europe -- specifically Triesto, Jugoslavia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Poland, Rumania and Albania, and even Finland -- and considers the different problems and the differences in passive resistance, the excesses that exist but which are lesser evils than the threats of Communism and Fascism. It is as an inquiring visitor, as a believer of the dangers of nationalism that the author pursues his investigation, and through interviews, from men in the street and the general public, on up through newspaper and political figures, he gets his information here and there, draws his conclusions as to the possibilities of war, the strength and weaknesses of the ""red sea"" infiltration. This is seasoned with an eye and an ear attuned to public opinion, with the decision that ""if there is to be no war and also no Communist domination we must have a social policy which removes as much discontent as possible in the West"" and the belief of the life in death of Communist life. Not a book to replace any other ""Iron Curtain"" investigations, but one which will add a footnote along the way.
