These brief biographies will be welcomed by the bookish child and particularly by parents who want their child to be bookish. The child who likes to write will also find inspiration and encouragement in the varied ways by which these authors came to fame. The nineteen men and women are well selected from the point of view of children's interests and so is the material about them. They are well written for easy reading, and illustrated from old prints and photographs. There is a certain blandness throughout due to the fact that no flaw or fault in any famous character is played up. Otherwise the book is very adequate.
