THE SHIP AND THE SHORE by Vicki Baum

THE SHIP AND THE SHORE

Vicki Baum uses a ship, cross sectioned, this time, and manipulates several lives and loves, in Grand Hotel manner, somewhat diluted, and set in the Dutch East Indies. The ship belongs to a tin and rubber tycoon, and is in port for a few hours. Halden and his daughter, Jeff, are on board; there is a planter with whom Jeff is in love, but who will not give up his work for her; there's a triangle created by a dance hall walf: and on board there is a drunken doctor, a charlaten magician, and on shore diverse planters and out landers. The natives run amok -- the riot brings Anders and Jeff together, and at the close several affairs are patched up. Rentals chiefly.
