GRAY DUCK CATCHES A FRIEND

Fed up with loneliness, Gray Duck sets a trap to catch a ""little animal"" to be her friend, but instead captures a mysterious FLASH that scares her to distraction. Mouse, toad, ground squirrel and snake -- who happen along with various theories about what the flash might be -- are equally upset until the appearance of the crescent moon seems to confirm snake's idea that the light is actually a piece of the moon. The reader's realization that the ""piece of the moon"" is a trapped firefly comes as something less than a FLASH; however Gray Duck's backwards logic and her pleasure in the four well dressed friends she finally makes helps smooth over the disappointment -- and Maestro's simple but effective animals are too human to be silly in their delusion.
