THE LITTLE COCKEREL

The infernal crowing -- ""Cock-a-doodle-doo! Turkish Sultan, give me back my golden sovereign!"" -- that prompted the Turkish Sultan to try to do away with the pesky cockerel also makes this a favorite story for telling aloud. Accompanied by a Turkish carpeting of color and an explosion of effects, the little cockerel's canniness is displaced, his crowing is drowned out. Moreover he's the last thing you'll notice in some of these crowded compositions.
