Polly Tierre escaped down the Ohio River after Indians had massacred her family and found a home with the Kentucky Harts. Her desire for peace led her to marry Matt Hart to escape his commanding cousin Jo Lane, but after Matt's death a year later, she became Jo's wife, bearing him in time ten children, lading the groaning board for all his guests, and waiting for him to return home while he legislated in Indiana, fought as general in the Texan campaign, and acted as governor in Oregon. Settled at last in Oregon which partly through his efforts became a state, Lane at sixty retired at last to live peacefully with his wife.
