A topsy turvy sort of book, in which the conventional human qualities have nothing to do with the case. The setting is New England, near Fall River -- the characters are the members of the Harris family, social outcasts, unmoral but thoroughly likable people, who get by with a complete inversion of the conventional rigid codes. There is humor and tragedy and romance in the telling. But it is a book for those who do not glorify uprightness and conservatism.
