Her life makes good reading, for the armchair traveler with a bias towards the Far East, for it is in the Orient that she finds herself most deeply rooted. Her childhood, acquiring an education against odds; her teaching jobs, which took her to Hawaii and to Japan; and journalism -- with intervals outside -- which took her round the world and back.
