A bluff account of hazardous enterprises and exploits is based in Alaska and all the adventure this country has to offer- from Kodiak bears to killer whales- attracted Virgil Burford. From the time when at 14 he ran away from home, he was conditioned towards an itinerant career- and in Alaska he first took up deep sea diving for the armed forces, then for the canneries. Fishing with traps- and fish pirating (he joined in here too)- a flourishing business; fortune hunting, below sea level for salvage and on land- prospecting; bears, octopus and whales, sea lions and whales (a touchy proposition when cornered), all were to prove fairly formidable opponents in his pursuit of a livelihood rather than the courtship of danger per se.... Mansized, for a manmade market.
