The author's thesis is this -- that there is nothing like an unhappy marriage to turn an innocent into a dangerous woman. Provocative handling of a tricky theme, with a certain fascination, in an intense, often too intimate story of the emotional maturing of a young girl. Elise makes a good if indifferent marriage to an obvious young man, Sonny, who takes her round the world on a honeymoon. At the start, Elise is sheltered, sensitive, dormant. Three men bring her out of her immaturity:- Count Th, psychiatrist, who understands her too well; Grange, Hollywood star, with whom she has a meaningless, sensuasily satisfactory affair, and Martin, whom she meets in the Far East, loves and loses. He alone shares her mystical inclinations. And the return to America finds her hardened, sophisticated...Feminine market.
