Pub Date: May 29th, 1957

The 15th anniversary of the founding of the Press is being celebrated by this collection of material which gives the richness of Nebraska, for not only its native sons but for readers interested in deepening their awareness of the American scene. A once over lightly reveals numerous familiar names,-Willa Cather, Mari Sandoz, Bess Streeter Aldrich, Gerald Johnson, Alvin Johnson, Charles G. Dawes, Louise Pound, and many others as contributors writing of their homeland. The earliest inclusions chart the march of the frontier, with transitions drawn from history. One meets heroes and villains, doctors, traders, teachers, politicians, buffalo hunters, desperadoes, cowboys. One shares the enthusiasm of visitors, won by the elusive lure of the prairies, the wheat fields and corn fields and cattle ranges. One comes to identify well-knowns with Nebraska in biographical bits:- Howard Hanson, musician, Alexander of the Phillies, Zanuck of picture fame, George Norris, fighting liberal and father of rural electrification. And even the current success, Around the World in 80 Days, immortalizes the Nebraska of Sioux raids, with the chapter from Jules Verne's classic. The cities, the towns, the wide open spaces -- and the people who made them are here brought together.
