The author, a professional writer and journalist, relates her experiences in trying to serve as teacher and guide for groups of teen-agers in a Baptist church. The account begins with the report of her own failure as a speaker in an adult Bible class and her recovery of self-confidence in a Toastmistress International Club. Once restored, she sets about tackling the problems of an adolescent church youth group. The narrative is full of detail and dialogue, and at times breathless. The author makes no profession of any theological depth or pedagogical sophistication--at least, she reveals none. If lacking in these substantial elements, the book may nevertheless give some encouragement to lay persons who are asked to assume similar responsibilities with little more than loyalty to guide them.
