The woman whose son, our president, feels our pain shares some of her own (and her pleasures as well) in an autobiography that offers a folksy, mom's-eye view of the ultimate American success story. Kelley also tells her own bootstrapping saga: nursing school; the death of her first husband; her troubled but not entirely awful marriage to the alcoholic Roger Clinton; the pride she's always taken in Bill. The late Kelley comes across as a tough woman who thoroughly knows what and who she is. She's tacky? So what. She offers a genial, vinegary defense of her false eyelashes. On finding another woman's lingerie in Roger's apartment (before they married): ``I'm not a jealous person, but I sure as heck don't like somebody making a Hempstead County idiot of me.''
