CHRISTMAS PANORAMA

There must, by now, be a picture-book ""Partridge in a Pear Tree"" for each of the twelve days of Christmas; this reissue is ""set down"" in calligraphy and ""illuminated,"" pseudo-medieval style, in glowing colors--with boringly composed bird groupings and saccharine, smirking maids, lords, and ladies. The song is paired here--as in the original 1966 edition--with ""The Friendly Beasts"" (""Jesus our brother kind and good/Was humbly born in a stable rude. . .""), which is not one of the more eloquent carols to start with; and Parsons' pictures of kings, beasts, and holy family wouldn't enhance a Christmas card.
