A portrait in time outlines the important stages in the life of the Mississippi, from our earliest knowledge of men who inhabited the region up to a picture of the present. Folsom man, who came at the time of glacial meltings, and Hopewellian man, are the prehistoric cultures preceding the Indian tribes who battled with De Soto, the first European to see the area. Following De Soto, the explorations of Marquette and Joliet, La Salle, Iberville and Bienville, Pike and others, were to lay open the area, each in its own way, to hunters and trappers, colonizers and finally the large scale settlers who came to form the modern Mississippi with its vast farms, cities, and fascinating stream of river traffic. The attempt at dramatization sometimes obscures where straight exposition would have proved more forceful, but the author has exciting elements with which to deal and on the whole makes good use of them.
